Today me and Tomás had a fun start of our Easter day… We woke up to a beautiful blue sky and we went for a walk just before breakfast.

Suffice it to say that even though the sun was warming our cheeks, the air was still freezing ⋆꙳❅*‧ ‧*❆ ₊⋆ (๑-﹏-๑)

After a week of deep cleaning, my home and my studio are perfectly tidy ☁︎

This has given me a lot of mental peace and I recommend it to anyone feeling down: tidy your space. I’ve used this past week to think about life as well, it’s easy to think deeply about certain things when you’re organizing stuff around the house. Revisiting old pictures, old sketchbooks, old yous

It’s funny… I feel I’ve come so far and yet, I don’t spend enough time drawing.
So one of those mornings organizing my studio, I just sat down and drew a mood board for April:

For April I want to start a new knitting project since I have finally finished my Sophie Scarf. Fun project by the way!
I stopped playing the piano last November when work and markets took a chunk of my time away, I must make an effort to get back to it! I want to finish learning the song from Howl’s Moving Castle.
I’m finally reading the Magic Mountain, and here is a quote I want to share with you

I have a book deal!

With the Indie Comic Books Publisher Gorila Sentado.
We agreed to make 6 volumes of the story of my little fairy (the one from the stickers) I must finish the first volume in time for Japan (June) hence the much needed deep spring cleaning!

Here I was on a date with my new friend Clàdia from Barcelona, we met on my last workshop and she got my attention because one, she’s spanish and two, she made carrot paper. Yes, real carrots! We had coffee, well, I had mushroom soup and tea eheh and we talked and journaled and had a wonderful time ⸜(｡˃ ᵕ ˂ )⸝♡

On the page to the right you can read her recommendations of music and books! She loves the song Memoria from Rosalía and Carminho and I listened to it this afternoon and it is SO PRETTY!

Here I tried my new hotaru-bi ink and rambled about how having dates in real life makes me happier and keeps me offline ㅤ♡

Today I want to write to you about how
I’m facing reality with a smile 𓍯𓂃𓏧♡

At the beginning of this year I made a habit tracker that I’ve been diligently keeping up to date. Here is the chart of February:

I spent the most of my time on things that either bring me money or make me a better artist. But it was not always like this… (╥﹏╥)

Before, I wanted to do all things at once! I wanted it all very fast. I was postponing beautiful hikes because ‘‘I have no time for that, I have to become an artist’’
I was using the present as a stepping stone to achieve my ideal future and as a result I was achieving nothing but stress. Since I can’t be creative under stress, instead of drawing I was doing admin work: post on social media for example.

I thought that time was more forgiving than it actually is.

By the end of January I looked back on my habit tracker and learned that essentially I did only two things a day. And they were the most useless and embarrassing things of all… I was either on instagram, or recording videos for my wannabe youtube channel about comic books (⸝⸝⸝O﹏ O⸝⸝⸝) I make no money from these platforms…

The good thing about my youtube project about comic books called Reading Slump is that, while making research for my videos, I found out about the instagram page of my current favourite author. He is only posting about one thing: his comic.
He doesn’t have a big audience but who cares, he has published books and they are amazing things that I love reading.

So I made it my mission to do only one thing a day in February, and just like him, I was determined to draw more.
After a month I have 12 pages of a comic book.
They are not finished, or perfect, but they are done ( ◡̀_◡́)ᕤ
I post these pages on my instagram and even though I don’t have a wide audience, those who see the pages always leave a kind comment behind (*ᴗ͈ˬᴗ͈)ꕤ*.ﾟ

So, I still post drawings, I still make videos for youtube and I still blog, look at me blogging right now. But these are not my priorities. My priority is my comic book and I use these platforms to talk about what I created instead of creating to have something to post about…

And upon this slap of reality, I smile

I meant to make a better post but is time to shut the computer down and have a nice evening reading a book. Before, I would stress about this not being the perfect post, I’d save it to finish it tomorrow, I’d be grumpy and overthink it during dinner…
But now I choose to practice patience. Leave it has it is. I assigned only one day a month to blog here, and one day is the time this blog will get 𓇢𓆸

I’m alone at the library. Alone, alone. I’m done with the art workshops for the day and I stayed longer to have a date with myself.
I have not touched my journal since I got back from London, the 1st of February.

Today I did a project from this book:

On page 45, Martina Calvi suggests a project called Scrapbooking Journal.
I must bring together a nice little pile of photographs, stickers, ribbons and set my intention for my pages.

My intention: Draw to Remember

We went to London for a few days and I took this notebook with me to journal on the go. I came back with many pages to fill in, still ₊˚⊹♡

Most of my pages are a day in the life, these are the ones I did while in London:

When I’m not in the mood for big texts, I write a title or a description of the moment.
I looked for a photo booth thinking already that I wanted, I needed to use it here.
It looks so pretty ( ˘͈ ᵕ ˘͈♡)

On this day we crossed the park with a warm matcha in my hands. I was not happy with this page so I worked on a similar one today at the library:

I made sure to take the menu home with me on the day we had pizza

I did this also today. I’m taking collage classes every Saturday of February and March and even though I had only one class so far, you can already see the good influence it’s having in my life.

I’m playing this cd that I bought recently at a concert and the mood is just right to talk to a friend, so while the soup is brewing, let’s catch up!

The first week in the Youth Art Studio went great!

To prepare for the workshops I create the projects at home first. I want to understand how long they take to make, what challenges I face, if making it is boring…

This week alone I had 2 successful crafting afternoons making these. What a joy! I would n-e-v-e-r make this for my portfolio, but here I was: in the zone, doing something cute and simple, something to have fun with, something everyone has done before 𐔌՞ ܸ.ˬ.ܸ՞𐦯

Moving on…

On our first day together at the Youth Art Studio I wanted to understand what is it that the kids love drawing the most, I wanted to craft with them the projects I showed you above but it was very important for me to make them draw their own thing and not just copy what I did… So I told them:

KIDS! TODAY WE ARE GOING TO DRAW YOUR FAVOURITE ANIMAL!

Favourite, favorite? - they asked
Yes, your most favourite! - I was so proud of myself, I’m such an innovative tutor, they will feel so happy and free and… 5 minutes later, no one is drawing.
But how do I start?
Well, with the dragon’s head! And then it’s teeth and the eyes, BIG EYES!
No one is drawing… Well kids, cmon, you can use any pens and pencils ◝(ᵔᗜᵔ)◜
But how do I do a dragon’s head? Can you help a bit more…?

This was chocking to me. I though kids had infinite imagination and braveness but these kids where not risking it. I was having a panic attack at this point. I didn’t want to teach them ‘‘how to draw a dragon’’ or ‘‘how to draw a bunny’’ that goes against everything I wanted! If anything, I wanted them to be unique and show me their unique perspectives. I don’t want to spoil them and tell them how to draw, they will become boring adults who make boring art!

But looking at their expressions of fear of failing, I realized that they wanted to feel safe first… After all a child’s purpose is to be a child, to play, have fun and be safe!
A child’s purpose is not only to become a successful adult. And so I sat down with each one of them and we drew together, I helped a lot, I showed them how to do it until I was no longer needed, and it was enlightening!

We had fun making art….

I’m officially out of my reading slump!

Last night I finished the manga series, Girls’ Last Tour:

It’s about 2 girls traveling in the end of the world. We follow their days navigating the ruins of civilization. This is a very wintery book! It’s set on a post-apocalyptic winter and they never see the sun since it all happens underground… Much like Iceland. Their goal is to reach the top.

December is feeling like the beginning of a New Year already…
I’m focusing on shedding distractions and clutter so I can start fresh.
I guess I have to warm up before the big marathon ahead, 12 months for 2026.

I’m deep cleaning my studio.
First, I took everything out! I vacuumed, cleaned the dust and then put everything back in a different order.

I’m also planning the next 12 months thoroughly, along with my resolutions.
Let me share it with you, happiness is only real when shared, right?

2026 Resolution #1

• Be present

I’m investing on a TRAVELER’S notebook! Have you heard of this before?
It has a leather cover that ages and becomes better with use. The inside can be changed with refills… I already do this! I gather my agenda, my sketchbook and my notebook all inside this pencil case I sewed myself.

As you know I’m officially a freelance artist starting January 1st, which means my time is my own ⊹ ࣪ ˖⏱ ୭˚. ᵎ
If there is anything I want more for myself is to be present. I realized that I’m most present when spending time drawing on my sketchbook so I’m going to start my mornings journaling, drawing, actually looking at what I planned on my agenda…

2026 Resolution #2

• Make money on my own

Youth Art Studio: this is my main income.
I designed this project back in September, applied for a fund in October, gathered participants in November and will start the classes in January 5th.
Starting January, the Youth Art Studio offers weekly creative workshops aimed at kids and teenagers of the town where I live, and also the neighbouring town.
This is an after school commitment where participants are showing up regularly.
Much like classes, but after school. Also, I’m not a teacher…

My goal is to entertain the kids and make them want to come back .☘︎ ݁˖

2026 Resolution #3

• Start a project

I want to write a book. Wait, not a book, book. I want to write a story to illustrate after.
Deadline for the text, my birthday: 13th of March

• Put myself out there

Me and Tomás are going to Japan for a month this summer and I’m signing up for ZINE FARM! This is a small event that accepts everyone who signs up, so no risk here °❀⋆.ೃ࿔*:･
Art Markets are a way to put myself out there, realise how good other artists can be, it’s a humbling experience and it always pushes me to create ‘‘better’’ art

2026 Resolution #5

• Finish a project

Right after Japan, I want to spend my summer drawing for the book I wrote earlier in the year.
Deadline for the illustrations: 30th September.

2026 Resolution #6

• Take risks

In September I’m going to visit my brother and his wife in Luxembourg and host a one week program workshop in a Youth Center for troubled kids while I’m there.

• Be prudent

If you ever ordered something from me, you know it takes time. Everything in Iceland is slower. People, the mail, time itself really. We don’t work as much or do as much and snail mail takes around 2 to 3 weeks to arrive. For this reason I want to sell my merch during November so it arrives to you safely by December.
Just in time for Christmas! ⸜(｡˃ ᵕ ˂ )⸝♡

• Be consistent

I’m committing to post one YouTube video every month in 2026 leading to December.
Since I will not be selling my art or taking commissions during December I want to do Vlogmas!

This is a way of keeping you engaged in my channel and make you come back for more in January 2027.ᐟ

I’m hosting a workshop at FRAME Comic Arts Festival

At the end of this month I will be flying to Prague! I’m hosting a workshop at Frame Festival and I’m going alone. First time in the city of Prague so all is new and exhilarating.

Public speaking and showing ways of doing things is something I love and have been doing for a while. Maybe it’s something you want to try too. Or maybe you already do, and you’re curious to read someone else’s perspective…

Today I want to share how I structure a class. Lets call it class even though I’m not teaching anyone anything ☺︎ people already know, I’m just there to show

An art workshop is the perfect excuse to share your obsessions

with people who have the same interests ٩(^ᗜ^ )و ´-

If you don’t know what kind of workshop you should host, look at your work.
You’ll find something you obsess over.
And if you can’t find it… Then you have the perfect excuse to start obsessing about something.

There are solutions, doors and ways we only discover after hours of practicing ✿
Those are the things you will share on a workshop.
What makes a good workshop is a host that opens doors for participants to keep creating and having fun ⭑.ᐟ

What is it about you that people compliment? What makes you stand out in your art?
I think the answer to those is the the answer to ‘‘what will my workshop be about?’’

Structure of my workshops

My obsession is storytelling!
So I structure workshops the same way I structure a story: in 3 acts.

Act 1 - Everything you need to know to understand Act 2

I start by presenting myself and explaining what we will be doing.
I’ll give you an example:

Hi, I’m Madalena and I’ll be your guide on today’s storytelling adventure!
You have several papers in front of you, the biggest one is for the final art and the others are for trying things out (⸝⸝> ᴗ•⸝⸝)
I then hold the big paper next to me like this:

We read panels from left to right and read speech bubbles top to bottom.
Your story doesn’t need panels or bubbles but keep in mind how the eye travels.
We tell the whole narrative in this single page, you can use any medium you like.

We will start like stories usually begin:
’’Once upon a time there was a…’’
I pause and look around…I love this part!
I’m about to tell them that they have to come up with a main character

Act 2 - Where everything happens

Whatever character you come up with, remember that you’ll have to draw it ☆⌒(ゝ。∂)
This character needs an emotion
Write it Down
Once upon a time the was a _________

This character can be anything! An autumn leaf, a squirl, a cup of tea, an elf… anything.

Everyday they___________
What is it that your character does everyday? Write it down

And I go on until I finish telling them the entire skeleton for telling a story.
I then go around while they are creating that little universe and drawing their character and read their skeleton.

In this phase I open some doors, give my opinion, help shorten some sentences, etc.
I leave room for silence too.

After a while, they already have a lot done and I help them stay on track, for example ‘‘Didn’t you say it was a sad autumn leaf? Why is she smiling?’’
More than expressions convey sadness, colours, compositions… My obsession with comics and storytelling helps so much here (´｡• ◡ •｡`) ♡

I’m also very uplifting, excited about their ideas and encouraging.
I think that helps, people want to have a good time and let go…
Heavy criticism doesn’t help in a 1 hour workshop.

Act 3 - Back at the shire sharing our adventures
After an hour of work it’s time to pour some tea and talk about our adventure!
I pick up their final work and show it to the class, like this:

This is when speaking in public comes in handy, I love it! ᕙ( •̀ ᗜ •́ )ᕗ

I gather everyone and create a spotlight for each final work, one by one.
I tell what I see in a jolly and engaging way.
This part is precious ⋆˚✿˖°

Participants often are so into their creations they never take a step back (with kind eyes) to see what they’ve created. Everyone is usually very excited to see what you’ve done and it’s wonderful to get recognition from other participants and not only from the host of the workshop.

One of the first assignments for creating a magnetic brand is to answer the following question:

‘‘What makes you unique?’’

Nothing… Nothing I thought. I realised that I am constantly trying to be like the people I admire. Every day, well, every hour! I discover new people I admire and I try to be like them.

I have many drawing styles and find it impossible to choose just one.
I love simple lines but also more detailed work and can’t decide which one I want be known for…
I work digitally and also with watercolours, must I really choose just one??

So I went on a journey to discover how to be myself! And obviously did it online instead of going to that beautiful place I always go to think when I’m sad (I have no such place)
I found a fun Ted Talk where the talker says:

Imagine a circle, No! Imagine an onion with layers
There’s the outside part of the onion, the peel - what people think of you
Then there’s a first layer of that onion - what you want people to think of you
Then the core - what you think of yourself

Wtf! I’m spending my days thinking more about my peel than my core…
I don’t want to feel lost anymore, I have to figure this out, I have to figure myself out!

What makes me unique?
I am an optimistic and I love fantasy… I’ll commit to this one

Another interesting assignment on the Artist Hub Academy is to list out

‘‘What are your routines?’’

Apparently, people need to keep seeing the same things over and over again to have trust in your brand. I have a big flaw here: I’m constantly coming up with new ideas (good for bringing people in) but I don’t stick to things long enough to make people stay. I don’t repeat themes or characters or ways of drawing faces or even a style… When building a brand, you have to show a repetition of things.
By listing my routines I define what people can connect me with ‘‘Oh is that artist with pink hair that loves coffee and cats’’ I remember thinking this about Frannerd and back then, she had pink hair for years! Drew cats so many times and kid you not, every time she released a video, she was drinking coffee. There, repetition.

So, what is my creative routine?
I drink coffee in the morning but so does everyone…

And then I had an epiphany .☘︎ ݁˖ I’ve been listening to a lot of CDs lately…

Put on a CD and set myself to draw during the time the album is playing.

When the album stops I move on to the next task .ᐟ☻

I had so much fun letting go and leaning into what makes me unique “I’m optimistas and I like fantasy” this is also a re-drawing of this old piece - repetition.

From now on

• I will only please myself while drawing.
  Being me is the first step into building my brand.

While I wait for the watercolors to dry I will write about the process of my solo exhibition happening this December at Nakano. I will tell you about my experience painting with kuretake watercolours.

Let’s start at the beginning - Paper .ᐟ

Since my originals will be for sale I ought to invest on a quality paper. My favorite watercolour paper is this, it’s a very smooth paper with just the right tone of white that won’t bend. But unfortunately the store in Reykjavík didn’t have it for sale anymore so I bought this one instead:
- Acquarello Watercolour, Grana Satinata, Hot Pressed, 300gr ⋆˚✿˖°

This paper bends a bit but it went back to its original shape after completely drying.
I chose hot pressed because the paper is smooth and fine, this is ideal for my detailed drawings. If it has texture, the smallest detail won’t be as I wish because of a little ‘‘mountain’’ in the paper ( ◡̀_◡́)ᕤ

This is the fun part - Watercolours 𖦹

I’m using kuretake watercolors to paint all of my pieces. These creamy little boxes have such beautiful, intense and rich colors!! Here’s a picture for you to appreciate them. I know, they are so pretty!

The painting process 🎧ྀི♪⋆.✮

I want everything in this exhibition to suggest that we’re in a magical world.
I went deep into understanding colors, their meaning, what sensations they convey.
In the book Interaction of Color, Joseph Albers writes that ‘‘In visual perception a color is almost never seen as it really is — as it physically is (…) And in the end, the study of color is the study of ourselves.’’

Since the theme of my exhibition is (my own) Metamorphosis ~ the process of transformation in two or more distinct stages. Persistence.
My metamorphosis from chaotic and raw to elegant and considered.
The colors must be a mirror to myself. This has been a good therapeutic exercise of looking within, and writing about it also helps with decisions.
That being said, the colors must be fun, the vegetation must be whimsical and the fairy’s expression has to spark joy… and giggles ‧˚♪ ₊˚⊹
The yellow base sets the overall tone and color scheme of the painting. I wanted this piece to be bubbly and optimistic! Nothing like yellow with this specific greenish blue to brighten my mood.

I eventually ruined it (obviously) because I didn’t stop when I must have had.
With watercolours you have to know when to stop!
‘‘But how do I know when to stop?’’

You don’t. You try, you realize that you went too far, you cry (you don’t have to cry) get frustrated…
The next time you do it, you already know when to stop, from experience.

This only means that the more you draw and paint, the better you will be. So if you’re thinking about making another reel or dealing with your inbox, don’t - go practice instead.

When browsing at the store, I could only think about the clients of this hidden gem…

Nakano is a Japanese inspired store that sells stationary and art materials tucked in Reykjavík.

These people have to know I exist! If they like these products they will probably like my work as well…

This is the mindset that gets me opportunities!
I have no shame to propose workshops, ask to sell my things in stores, apply for markets…

But why an exhibition?

I proposed an exhibition because the store has beautiful things for sale already.
I can’t be one more in the crowd: I don’t stand a chance. I don’t have experience making stationary and my products have been rejected by store owners in the past. I’m clearly doing something wrong… But I can focus on that later.

I need advantage to stand out... I need a spotlight, a wall, I need an event!
I need something I’m good at!

An Exhibition 𐙚⋆°｡⋆♡

In today’s letter I’ll tell you my process. I’ll divide my process in different posts to not bore you to death (≖_≖ )

Goals for the exhibition

With this exhibition I want to reborn and be perceived as a refined artist…
I want to sell my things at a higher price so I can work at a slower pace :)

Theme of the exhibition

The theme of my exhibition is Metamorphosis the process of transformation from an immature form to an adult form in two or more distinct stages. Persistence. My metamorphosis from chaotic and raw to elegant and considered. I feel this change in me and my personality and I want to expand it to my work. This exhibition is about becoming who I’ve always been, slowly and on purpose.

Since my target visitors are consumers of Nakano: lovers of Japan and all things kawaii I went looking for Japanese exhibitions for inspiration…

I like the frames this artist used, and also the fact that she doesn’t use frames sometimes. She has big format and very small illustrations put together and she occupies one wall which is about the space I have :) Her exhibition’s little book and poster are also very nice. I like that she shows a lot of her pieces in the poster.

Exhibitions I tend to love and return to, have a narrative.

I have tried to create a story for a recurrent character in my sketchbook: The Fairy. She’s curious, and sometimes quiet. She’s also me ⋆˚✿˖°

But I think I have to do something easier since a book is not coming out of me.
There is nothing wrong with doing something easier if it means I can actually have a finished project!

I want a couple of bigger pieces next to smaller ones, like that artist did on her exhibition. I want it to fall in place naturally…
The fairy can be painted in a small scale and the girl can be painted in big canvas.
I want to use this opportunity to tell a silent narrative with a few paintings hanging on a wall. I will work hard to pull this off („• ֊ •„)੭

Right now I’m in that phase of putting all in the table and selecting as I go.

Materials I will use

I will work with graphite and watercolours from Nakano store. The owner kindly offered me a beautiful set (yes you read it right, o-f-f-e-r-e-d) a beautiful set of Kuretake watercolours and a bag to organize my materials ♡

I’m writing to you from my studio, everything is quiet… I’m the only one awake and my morning coffee is already gone. Today’s message won’t be very long, I must seize the day being an official freelance artist.

I quit my job ✿ starting January…

I’m officially a freelance artist

Now that I’m dependent solely on my art to make money, I will not go back to do all of those things… Even though I will have the time (starting January)

Here is what I will do instead:

• My second solo exhibition, this time at Nakano 𑁍ࠬܓ
  I hope to sell original work!
  I’m making stationary to be sold in the store of Nakano as well

• I’m hosting a workshop in Prague for the FRAME festival
  I'll have a table with my art for sale, wish me luck!

• I’m hosting Art Workshops in Iceland

  One of them is on Halloween and involves mulled whine with spooky poetry…

• I’m starting a Youth Art Studio in my town
  This project provides regular art classes for the Youth of my county for a year and hopefully, many more years to come ✎

• I’m starting this Blog - Drawing Diaries ❀
  This one will not bring me money from subscriptions or anything but…
